It’s that time of year again. The suns out a little longer. The weather’a a little warmer, and if you’re a student you’re wrapping up your school year. This is a time where you’re probably feeling that second quarter pressure, wondering what the rest of your year is going to look like. Or you may just be excited that you can finally see summer coming around the corner. This is the perfect time, before summer hits and you’re distracted by the fun, trips, and travel, to evaluate yourself and your environment. Are you satisfied with how you’ve been treating you so far this year? Are there any lingering feelings that are not serving your purpose? My advice is to identify those things and deal with them head on. By doing that, you’re freeing up space for beautiful things to grow. There has never been a better time to stop letting negative thoughts fester. One of the most empowering realizations I’ve ever had is that I have agency over how I feel.
Easier said than done, I know. It’s not easy. If it were easy to let go of negative feelings, we would all walk around weightless and free but that’s far from reality. But with intentional practice, it is possible.
Here are practical techniques I’ve found that help me in identifying my negativity and getting past it.
1. Call it out in the moment.
Inevitably, negative thoughts will enter your mind. Especially when you’re used to allowing them to circulate through your head all day long. That doesn’t mean you have to believe them. It may feel weird at first, but when you hear that negative thought, instead of letting it create a thread in your brain, linking one inadequacy to the next- challenge it. You are amazing and probably don’t give yourself enough credit for it. Flip that thought by turning into a positive affirmation.
2. Be kind to yourself
Not only is it important to challenge negative thoughts, but it’s imperative that you get in the habit of speaking kind to yourself. It’s the foundation for how the rest of your life to flow. If you treat yourself poorly, it spills out into your presence in the world and inevitably makes you feel it fine for others to treat you poorly as well.
3. The Pattern App
If you’re into astrology, this app is perfect for you. Based on your birth chart, it gives you an outline of your personality and how it affects what's happening in your life. For me, it’s been priceless in helping me understand why I operate the way I do.
